Readers of Novosti will be excited to hear about the following event that took place on October 18th, 2012 in Chernivtsi, Ukraine (formerly in the Soviet Union), hometown of our Anatoly Vishevsky (translation of the article, which is in Ukrainian, follows):

У Чернівцях відбувся літературний вечір «Повернення до Міста»

17 жовтня у Муніципальній бібліотеці ім. А. Добрянського відбулася унікальна, навіть для Чернівців, мистецько-культурна подія.  За ініціативи двох учнів Анатолія Добрянського, нині американських професорів  - слав’яністів Бориса Брікера та Анатолія Вішевського відбувся літературний вечір «Повернення до Міста».

Ініціатори вечора – колишні чернівчани, у 70-ті роки минулого століття, ще за студентських років здобули всесоюзну славу як автори коротких оповідань на знаменитій 16-й сторінці «Литературной газеты», в журналі «Юность» та у надзвичайно популярній програмі Всесоюзного радіо «С добрым утром!».  До речі, першу рецензію на твори молодих авторів написав свого часу  саме їх наставник Анатолій Добрянський, який і відчинив таким чином їм дорогу у літературу.

“Return to the City” Literary Event in Chernivtsi

On October 17 in the Chernivtsi Municipal Library named after A. Dobryansky, a cultural event, unique even for our city, took place. On the initiative of two former students of Professor Anatoly Dobryansky, who are now themselves Professors and Slavists in the United States, Boris Briker and Anatoly Vishevsky, took place a literary evening “Return to the City.” The organizers of the evening, former Chernivtsi dwellers, in their student days received All-Union (Soviet Union) recognition in the 1970s as authors of short humor prose on the famous 16^th page of “Literary Gazette,” in the journal “Youth,” and in the exceptionally popular All-Union Sunday radio program “Good Morning!” By the way, Anatoly Dobryansky, the teacher of then young students and authors, wrote the first review of their prose that opened their doors to literature.

В пятницу 12 октября за Русским столом наши студенты-ветераны летних программ за рубежем и в США поделятся своими впечатлениями со студентами, которые собираются учиться в России или на летних программах русского языка в США. За русским столом можно будет обсудить как программы, так и возможные стипендии и другую материальную помощь с профессорами кафедры.

Эта специальная встреча за Русским столом будет проходить в комнате 224С – на втором этаже столовой (напротив лестницы, с видом во двор). Говорить в этот раз будем по-английски!

This Friday, October 12th, the Russian Department will host a special Russian Table, where veterans of off-campus study programs will share their experiences with students interested in studying off-campus–both in Russia, and on summer programs in the US. Faculty will also be on hand to answer questions about programs, and about funding.

Please join us for lunch in in room 224C, which is one of the reserved dining spaces on the 2nd floor of the dining hall (the furthest one from the top of the stairs; it overlooks the courtyard). While we customarily speak Russian during this time, we will talk about programs по–английски!
